3.45 York, Saturday, October 8

In the Coral Sprint Trophy (3.45) at York on Saturday, Robert Cowell’s attempt to reinvent Sir Robert Cheval as a sprinter has yet to bear fruit, in terms of a win, but the Green Desert gelding has run creditably in defeat on all five starts since joining the yard in May and should find this easier than the Ayr Gold Cup three weeks ago. After holding every chance at Ayr, the five-year-old weakened in the closing stages to finish eleventh of 23, beaten 8¼ lengths, behind Brando and, although 1lb higher in the weights, is reunited with Louis Steward, who takes off a useful 3lb.

Sir Robert Cheval has won just once on turf, over a mile, but his sire, Green Desert, won the July Cup and Robert Cowell is a pretty shrewd judge of sprinters so, from a decent draw, it would be no surprise to see him go close at rewarding odds.

2.50 Newmarket, Saturday, October 1

Mark Johnston’s progressive 3-year-old filly Haley Bop is obviously on good terms with herself at present and was unfortunate to run into a similarly progressive at Ayr two weeks ago. She had no answer to Morando, who was completing a hat-trick, on that occasion, but lost little caste in defeat and should be highly competitive once again off a 1lb higher mark. All her wins so far have come on good, or softer, going, but with an unsettled outlook for the rest of the week some easing of the current good to firm going at Newmarket is a distinct possibility, in which case she’ll be in her element. She can make the trip from North Yorkshire worthwhile.

3.45 Ayr, Friday, September 16

The Al Maktoum, Dundee College (3.45) at Ayr on Friday is wide open, but may provide Richard Fahey’s 3-year-old filly Giddy with an opportunity to resume winning ways. The daughter of Kyllachy has yet to add to her debut win, over 5 furlongs, at Beverley last August, but the return to the minimum trip should be in her favour and she’s reportedly worked extremely well.

She demonstrated, when going down by a head in a 0-95 contest, over 6 furlongs, on her seasonal debut at Ripon, off a 1lb higher mark, that a race of this nature is well within her capabilities. Her two subsequent efforts have been less convincing, but she drops back into 0-85 company on just her seventh start – just her second over 5 furlongs – and it’s much too soon to be writing her off just yet.

4.45 Doncaster, Wednesday, September 7

I’m just breaking myself away from a Free Slots online session to provide you with a mid week tip. Don’t worry I’ve not let casino games take centre stage, I’m just gearing up for my fast approaching trip to Great Yarmouth, which is a little under two weeks away now. I’ll be sure to let you know I get on at the races and the casino afterwards. Let’s hope it makes for happy reading!

In the 4.45 at Doncaster on Wednesday, Mount Logan carries a 6lb penalty for winning a Listed race at Goodwood earlier this season, which may make him vulnerable, especially as he was bitterly disappointing when only sixth of seven, beaten 8 lengths, behind Kings Fete when last seen at Goodwood in July. Roger Varian’s 5-year-old has had a break to recover from his exertions, but may still have to give best to Oasis Fantasy, who has officially improved by 15lb in handicaps since the start of the season and fully deserves a crack at some black type.

The Oasis Dream gelding is 4lb better off with Mount Logan than in a handicap and has run creditably in defeat in valuable handicaps over 1 mile 2 furlongs, 1 mile 2½ furlongs and 1 mile 4 furlongs since winning over the latter distance at Newmarket in May. He’s looked an awkward ride, but wears a first-time visor and is reunited with Silvestre De Sousa, who’s won on him once and finished second on him twice on the three occasions he’s ridden him this season, so he should lack nothing in terms of assistance from the saddle. He probably doesn’t want too much rain, but the prevailing good to soft going on Town Moor is fine and he looks to have bright prospects of making a successful transition to Listed company.
